The overall goal of football is to score as many points as you can on the opposing team, just like in most sports. The main difference is there are a variety of ways that a team can score points.
IMPORTANT TERMS TO KNOW ⤵
- Touchdown (TD): A score worth 6 points that is achieved by advancing the ball into the opponent’s end zone.
- Field Goal: A score worth 3 points that is achieved by kicking the ball through the opponent’s goalposts.
- Extra Point: A kick attempt following a touchdown that is worth 1 point.
- Safety: A score worth 2 points when the offensive team is tackled in their own end zone.
- Offense: The team with possession of the ball that is attempting to advance and score.
- Defense: The team trying to prevent the offense from advancing and scoring.
- Quarterback (QB): The offensive player who receives the snap, makes throws, and directs the offense. See: Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, Aaron Rodgers, and Matthew Stafford.
- Running Back (RB): A position on offense responsible for carrying the ball and receiving passes. See: Austin Ekeler and Christian McCaffrey.
- Wide Receiver (WR): A position on offense responsible for catching passes. See: Ja’marr Chase and Tyreek Hill.
- Tight End (TE): A position on offense that combines blocking and pass-catching duties. See: Travis Kelce.
- Offensive Line: The group of players responsible for protecting the quarterback and creating running lanes.
- Defense Line: The players on defense who line up opposite the offensive line.
- Linebacker: A position on defense responsible for tackling and pass coverage.
- Cornerback: A position on defense responsible for covering wide receivers.
- Safety: A position on defense responsible for covering the deep part of the field and assisting in tackling.
- Punt: A kick used to relinquish possession of the ball to the opponent.
- Kickoff: A kick used to start the game or resume play after a score.
- Interception: When a defensive player catches a pass intended for an offensive player.
- Fumble: When a player loses possession of the ball during a play.
- Incomplete Pass: A pass that falls incomplete, not caught by an eligible receiver.
- Sack: When the defense tackles the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage.
- Huddle: When the offense gathers to plan the next play.
- Snap: The action of passing the ball between the legs to start a play.
- Down: An attempt by the offense to advance the ball towards the end zone, consisting of four attempts/downs to gain a certain yardage. Example: 3rd down.
- Yard Line: The lines on the field indicating the distance from the end zone.
